The Parish of San Publju in Floriana has announced the programme for Ash Wednesday, which will be observed on 18 February 2026, marking the beginning of Lent. The day, known in Maltese as L-Erbgħa tal-Irmied, opens the forty-day penitential period leading to Easter and invites the faithful to enter a time of prayer, reflection and renewal.
On the day, Masses will be celebrated at 7.00am, 8.30am, 9.15am and 12.35pm. In the evening, a concelebrated Mass will take place at 6.30pm. During this celebration, the traditional imposition of ashes will be carried out, a central rite of the day symbolising repentance and conversion at the start of the Lenten season.
The spiritual significance of Lent has been highlighted in a reflection attributed to Pope Leo XIV, who describes this period as a time when the Church, with maternal care, invites the faithful to place the mystery of God once again at the centre of their lives. The reflection emphasises the renewal of faith and the importance of not allowing the heart to be lost amid daily worries and distractions.
Ash Wednesday sets the tone for the Lenten journey, encouraging believers to deepen their faith and spiritual commitment.
