This year’s edition of the National Mechanised Fireworks Festival will take place on Saturday, 18th April, the eve of the feast of St. Publius, the Floriana Local Council announced during a press conference.
Floriana Mayor Nigel Holland explained that this year’s edition will be organised more directly by the Local Council, while thanking the Malta Tourism Authority for its logistical support. He said the Council will continue to invest resources to ensure the festival grows in both quality and reputation, while maintaining high technical and organisational standards to ensure participants have the best possible conditions.
Deputy Mayor James Aaron Ellul emphasised the cultural and historical importance of pyrotechnics in Malta, noting that the festival provides a platform for Maltese artists to showcase their creativity. He called for increased financial support from government entities, as the costs of organisation and raw materials continue to rise. Ellul also thanked the Malta Pyrotechnic Association and the volunteers for their contribution.
Representatives of the Malta Pyrotechnic Association explained that the festival will be divided into five categories: Catherine Wheels (Katina), Universal, 2D, 3D, and Coloured Fountains. The first four focus on rotating mechanisms powered by gunpowder fountains, while the fifth emphasises the visual effect of coloured fountains.
The fireworks structures will be evaluated according to defined criteria, including design, the quality of pyrotechnic materials, mechanical craftsmanship, and the execution of the burn according to the plan submitted to the jury.
The organisation will follow a strict structure, with a limit on participants and a ballot system to determine categories and the sequence of setup and firing. A jury composed of Maltese and foreign experts will evaluate both the setup and performance during firing, while participants must observe rigorous safety regulations and comply with applicable laws.
The festival will also include provisions on financial subsidies, protest procedures, and the announcement of results, ensuring a transparent and competitive process through to the very end.
